It’s a veritable heat wave here!  With temperatures close to 70 degrees it is not feeling a lot like Christmas.  But it is feeling like a nice day to go to the playground so that’s what we did.  And I wore one of my favorite playground ensembles that takes me easily for a bite to eat on the way home.  I was happy to bring the boyfriend jeans out of the close and not have to bundle up in boots and socks.  But I’m ready for temps to go down and still holding out hope for a white Christmas!

Since it’s been so cold out, I haven’t had the chance to take any outfit shots.  I find it really hard to take off the sleeping bag I call a coat long enough to get on the subway these days.  Luckily, I had this post just waiting for the right time to go out.  In it, I paired a navy polka dot blouse with black jeans proving yet again that you can wear navy and black.  It’s actually really chic and subtly modern.  I love how the silk blouse softens the look and the pendant necklace creates a fun layer.  The bag is a nice pop of color in another shade of blue I adore.  Here’s to some “warmer” days to come for more outfit inspiration.

My husband wants us to be one of those cool families that hike and camp and don’t need devices or TVs or fanciness in our lives.  I like to appease him every once in a while and go along for the ride.  I’m much more of a “glamper” than a rugged, durable girl, but I still like the beauty of the outdoors, some good old-fashioned fresh air and the amaziness that is seeing my son discover new things in nature.

But I still want to look good doing it.  On a recent trip I tried my darndest to marry cute with rugged.  (This was before this horrible cold-snap that has kept me off the streets and unable to take outfit shots.)  I don’t think I succeeded but it inspired me to try to find some adorable hiking apparel, starting with some cute boots (always start with the shoes, right?)  Here’s what I wore on the trip and the boots on my wish list this Christmas.

Shirt: Paige Denim (c/o) / Jeans: Hudson / Tee: Splendid / Shoes: Nike

Boot alternatives:

1: North Face / 2: Ahnu / 3. North Face  / 4. Patagonia / 5. New Balance (men’s but who cares?!)

One thing I love about this blog is that it makes me take a hard look at my closet and figure out what to wear.  The biggest benefit?  I find things I haven’t worn in years and make them new again with a little styling fun.  Take this jacket.  It’s Anna Sui for Target circa 2009 (does that make it vintage?)  I haven’t worn it but a few times and it has sat in the back of my closet for at least three years.  Thankfully, it has lasted many a closet edit and I have never given it away or sold it on eBay because I am newly obsessed with it.  You could say it’s the bomb!  Take a look in your closet and see if there’s anything you can recycle next time you’re searching for something to wear.
Pear Shaped Pointer: For ladies with hips (like me) wearing a jacket that tapers in at the waist like a bomber jacket can be a dicey endeavor.  Paired with jeans, it’s likely to cut you off in just the wrong place.  Try pairing it with a flared skirt or over a dress like I am here for a more flattering look.

When I first saw the movie “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” I thought it was such a joke to think that the same pair of jeans could fit the likes of svelte Blake Lively and curvy America Ferrera.  Having searched most of my life for a pair of jeans that fits well, it seemed impossible that such an elusive pair of denim existed.  That was, until I found the James Jeans Twiggy jeans.  After trying them on myself, I enlisted my sisters who all have varying body types to sport a pair and tell me what they thought.  What I learned - they fit us all equally as elegantly!  Betsie, in blue, is tall with a more hourglass figure with curvy hips that taper down into enviable stems.  Carrie, in the brown jacket, basically got all the top-shelf luck in the family and was also blessed with skinny legs and calves (I’m very jealous).  Lisa, in gray, is like a very slender pear although I would hardly call her hips “hippy” as she is a bit more athletic.  And I, of course, am a classic pear shaped girl. The best part about these jeans, besides the fact that anyone can wear them and look amazing?  I’m giving away a pair to one lucky reader!  Check out the giveaway entry form below for your chance to win!  And share it with your sister or friend so they can enter too!  Good luck!

My husband has amazing taste which makes shopping for him so hard.  He knows what he wants, he’s likely researched the heck out of it to find the best possible option, and he NEVER tells me what’s on his list.  It drives me crazy.  Luckily, this year he helped me curate this gift list so I know what to get him and you know what to buy the discerning guy in your life.

Hi, this is Katie. I’m the founder and blogger of Pear Shaped Girl. I’m here at Ann Taylor, and I’m going to talk about the best pants for women with heavy thighs. I have this problem so I’m pretty much an expert on how to find a flattering fit. What I really like to opt for is a wide leg pant. The wide leg creates the illusion of a smaller waist and really just hides the heavy thighs underneath. If you want to make sure that you have flat pockets or sew your pockets down from your tailor. Make sure that the knee break is in the right place no matter what kind of pants you have. This is going to make sure that your thighs are flattered with the rest of the pant look. And also opt for a length that works for whatever shoes you are going to be wearing. Make sure you bring your shoes to the tailor to make sure that they are the right length. Otherwise they’ll be too short or too long which can create an unflattering look.
